Guest Rider

It's so much fun having friends visit. Besides the fun of having a riding partner, we can take pictures of each other. This is Pearl and Bear.

Peahen and Chicks

My peahen still has her two chicks! There are lots of ravens around, but if she keeps hanging around the neighbor's car they'll probably be OK.

Another Night, Another Moon

For some reason my camera filters out the red - this was a very red moon rising - but I liked the picture anyway.

And the Moon Called My Name

I was walking back up the hill after feeding the animals, when I heard a whisper in the air. I turned around to stare directly at a small golden slice of moon. Hello Moon, good to see you, and what a beautiful color you are.

By the time I snagged my camera the moon had risen above the cloud and was glowing brilliantly. Thank you, Moon, for calling my name.

Peachicks!

My peahen has reappeared from her next with two chicks!

I hope they survive. I'd love to have more peafowl.

Carport Capers

A friend came over today, and we tackled the downed carport. I was hoping that between my two damaged carports I could make one functional one.

Early on we had a visitor, offering to help.

But he decided to move on instead.

When we got the tarp off it revealed Jesse, sleeping in the bushes. It's difficult to hire good help these days! We did get the remains dismantled. Unfortunately the same pieces are damaged on both carports, so making a whole one won't be so easy.

Goblet of Sky

It was heavily overcast until around 3PM today. Then the clouds opened up to show a goblet of sky, decorated with lace clouds.

More Experiences With Hay

My latest hay stack

Now covered in tarps to keep out the predicted rain. This was an interesting stack to cover.

A Touch of Brightness

I love Oceanspray (Holodiscus discolor). It has interesting leaves, and this time of year lovely creamy foam flowers. This one is next to the lane. It brightens my day every time I pass by.

More Road Crew

Alpaca, helping clear brush next to the house (as well as along the lane).

Road Crew

I have a 1/4 mile of lane between my house and the county road that I need to maintain. I've been working my wrists off cutting grass and berry vines. This is a dual purpose activity, keeping the lane open (and legal) and providing fresh grass for the horses and alpaca. Today I had help.

I was working with Molly, trying to see how much training she really has (as opposed to what we were told she has), and she was not cooperating. She did not want to work with me today. We want to sell her, and it's important to know if she really does know how to pack, and possibly to be ridden.

I decided to change the parameters, as arguing with a mule is not productive. It took some convincing, but I talked her into coming down the lane, and then pointed her at the overgrown grass. All of a sudden she became very cooperative.

She seemed to enjoy having someone to graze with. I was really surprised at how good it felt to have someone helping me get the jungle under control. After a half hour of challenging each other, we were having a great, companionable time. I couldn't believe how quickly she mowed down the high center strip of grass and weeds. She made great inroads into the side strips as well. This may become a regular event.

Bursting With Babies

I adore my Sebright-cross bantams. And who wouldn't? This little hen is just bursting with newly-hatched chicks, too many to completely cover, at least when they are curious.

Her nest was just outside the dog area, just out of nose reach. Safe from the dogs, and the dogs kept her safe from the world.
